Call to Action for 05/16/2025

Greetings, Prince William:  If you have that special volunteer/volunteer group whose support has been especially helpful to you, here's a great opportunity to recognize their service!  Nominations for the Governor's Volunteerism & Community Service Awards are now open until 5pm on June 23, 2025.  Individual and group categories are available - it's a wonderful way to recognize and thank those special volunteers for all they do to support your agency!  Please visit www.servevirginia.org/awards/governors-awards/ for more information.  Questions?  Please email sarah.lawson@dss.virginia.gov to learn more.

·   ACTS Hunger Prevention Center has a Critical Need for compassionate volunteers to deliver food to homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities in eastern PWC.  They have a particular need for deliveries on Mondays!  Food is picked up at ACTS, 17948 Dr. David Cline Lane in Dumfries and delivered to clients at their home.  Deliveries occur between 11am-1pm; most routes take about one hour.  Volunteers should be prepared to pick up boxes which may weigh up to 40 lbs.  It's a meaningful way to make a direct impact in just an hour of your time!  Please email SCouteau@actspwc.org to learn more.

·   The hard-working staff at BEACON is already looking ahead!  Their Summer Conversation Class runs July 7-24 on Zoom, and they need volunteers to be a Summer Conversation Class Teacher.  No prior teaching experience or foreign language knowledge is needed; training is provided!  You'll feel great as you help adult immigrants improve their English skills online!  BEACON is also recruiting volunteers for their Fall Session which begins August 18 - online and in-person options available include teaching, substituting, tutoring and more!  Please sign up for a volunteer information session to learn more at https://forms.gle/sn6uVLG5upHrTfuH7 or contact Seth Mazzaro at smazzaro@osbva.org or 571.531.5838.

·   Brain Injury Services (BIS) has an ongoing need for volunteers to be PALS (Providing a Link for Survivors) for brain injury survivors in the local area.  Once a month outings for things such as coffee, walks, chess, lunch, etc. can help clients get their life back on track following a traumatic brain injury!  Please visit www.braininjurysvcs.org/volunteer/ for more information, email mthyen@braininjurysvcs.org or call 703.451.8881 ext. 232 to learn how you can help.

·   You can make a difference in the life of a child! CASA CIS needs volunteers age 21+ who care about children growing up in a safe, permanent and loving home.  The staff will hold their next Virtual Information Session on May 28, 6pm-7pm.  Learn how you can help protect abused and neglected children in your community by becoming a volunteer advocate.  Please email jpolen@casacis.org or call 703.330.8145 to receive the link to the meeting or to inquire about alternate dates.

·   You can help ensure fresh food is available to food-insecure families!  The SERVE campus of Northern Virginia Family Service needs volunteers age 18+ on Monday, June 30, 9am-2pm to help staff take a complete inventory of food and supplies in their 8,000 square foot warehouse in Manassas.  Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and should be prepared to do moderate lifting up to 35lbs.  This is a great one-time opportunity which will help SERVE improve its food assistance program to the nearly 600 households who visit each month for help!  Volunteers will also help identify urgent food needs for clients.  Please email Navara Cannon at ncannon@nvfs.org for more information.

·  Is your office/club/civic organization looking for a meaningful group volunteer opportunity? The SERVE campus of Northern Virginia Family Service may have just what you're looking for!  Opportunities include providing a meal for 65 shelter guests, assisting with the upcoming Hunger Resource Center inventory June 30, providing and planting a garden for an early childhood program, and much more!  Think how great you'll feel as you help feed the homeless, improve food assistance for 600 families or have children experience the joys of a garden!  For more information, please send an email to ncannon@nvfs.org.

·  Prince William Special Olympics needs both adult and youth volunteers (minimum age 12 years) to support their programs. Volunteers can help with sports practices, assistant coaching, chaperoning or administrative duties.  No sport experience required!  Adult volunteers must complete a background check, training provided for ongoing volunteers.  Youth volunteers can get service hours credit.  You'll feel wonderful as you help special needs clients discover the joy of sports and achieve a sense of accomplishment and pride!  Please email areacoordinator@pwsova.org to learn how you can help.

·  The fun folks at Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center, 16198 Silver Lake Roadin Haymarket have started their Kayak Camps but volunteers age 18+ are needed to support the camps' remaining dates on June 14, July 12 and July 26!  A maximum of 10 students ages 9-18 will attend each session and volunteers will receive the required training.  You'll feel fabulous as you help special needs clients gain self-confidence, build self-esteem and allow this agency to meet their mission of "Changing Lives, One Hoofbeat at a Time!"  Please email volunteercoordinator@rainbowriding.org for more information, visit www.rainbowriding.org to learn more.

·  You can support our men and women in the Marine Corps!  The two USO sites on Quantico Marine Base need volunteers to support their daily operations as well as special events.  Shifts run 4 hours, 7 days a week and there's plenty of ways you can help.  It's a wonderful way to say, "Thank You" and "Semper Fi" to these brave troops, many of whom are far from home!  Please email hsullivan@uso.org for more information on how you can help.

If you are looking for other opportunities, please don't forget to call our wonderful team at Volunteer Prince William at 703.369.5292.  You can also visit our website at www.volunteerprincewilliam.org.  Thanks so much for all you do in our community.
