Help Kids Have a Successful Start to the New School Year - Donate to a Back to School Drive!
Bad News, Kids: Schools will be opening soon, and school supplies programs are beginning to heat up! Note: The sales tax holiday for Back to School Supplies will be held August 2-4, 2019. For more information, please visit https://www.tax.virginia.gov/virginia-sales-tax-holiday.
Here's a sampling of some of the Back to School Drives being held to help children begin the 2019-2020 school year with the supplies they need. Anyone can donate to these drives; it's a good way to hold a drive to collect/donate school supplies and get in some volunteer time!
- The David J. Cobb Foundation is sponsoring Yorkshire Elementary School for school supplies. Their goal is to have at least 266 backpacks stuffed and ready for children to begin the school year! You can support this drive by donating through the Facebook page (David J. Cobb Foundation) or print out the list of requested school supplies from their Facebook page. - Saved Hands Foundation is holding their 6th Annual Free Back to School Backpack Giveaway August 10, 1pm-3pm, at VFW Post 1503, 14631 Minnieville Road, Dale City 22193. To donate school supplies or volunteer, please call 571.572.9013 and leave a message.
- SPARK, the Education Foundation for Prince William County Public Schools, is accepting school supply donations July 22-August 14 at the Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas 20112. Donated supplies will be delivered to schools for distribution to needy children. Most needed supplies include backpacks, dry erase markers, scissors, pencil boxes, pocket folders, loose-leaf paper, pencils, composition books, spiral notebooks, etc. Please email hoffmabx@pwcs.edu to learn more.
- Northern Virginia Family Service (to include SERVE) is conducting their Back2School Drive to provide kids and teens across Northern Virginia with supplies needed to have a successful beginning to the new school year. To donate funds or get a complete list of school supplies needed, please visit https://www.nvfs.org/support/back-to-school/. The top 5 supplies needed are backpacks (esp. large sizes, no mini packs or wheels, please), spiral notebooks (both wide-ruled and college ruled), colored pencils, 1-inch and 2-inch binders and dry erase markers. Volunteers are needed July 31 - August 16 to assist with set up, sorting, packing and distributing supplies. Please email cfaltz@nvfs.org with any questions.
- The SERVE campus of Northern Virginia Family Service needs volunteers to help hand out backpacks in Manassas. Volunteers age 10 and up are welcome; volunteers ages 10-15 may volunteer WITH a parent. Please follow these steps to sign up:
