Our first Volunteer Spotlight for Senior Corps Week shines on Kay Kendall, a Woodbridge resident who stays extremely busy! Kay describes herself as a retired senior citizen who's a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She's been married over 30 years to "…an amazing man." Kay is also a veteran who served over eight years with the US Army, and was posted in Maryland, Florida, Texas and Germany.
When not volunteering, Kay has many hobbies including reading, making jewelry, crocheting, carving wood and working on puzzles.
Kay heard about RSVP a few years ago at a senior picnic and felt it would be a good way to keep busy and give back to the community. She volunteers up to four times a week, assisting at the Woodbridge Senior Center and transporting veterans and their spouses to local medical appointments.
Kay enjoys volunteering for RSVP because, "I just like helping others. Everyone I have helped is so appreciative of what we do for them. I also like hearing their stories; they have lived such interesting lives!"
The clients receiving rides from Kay have also been appreciative. Some of the comments include:
"Kay is a very pleasant person to talk with, always very patient and willing to take extra time if it's needed to help her clients."
"Kay is great-she takes care of me as if I were her own mother!"
"It's the first time I've ever enjoyed going to the dentist!"
Kay's outstanding volunteer service was recognized when RSVP-Greater Prince William nominated her for the Virginia National Service Award in 2017. Although she was not selected, Kay was the winner of Volunteer Prince William's Colleen J. Hersson Award for Volunteering Excellence that year. It's wonderful to have RSVP volunteers such as Kay who are a living example of the giving spirit. We at Volunteer Prince William are so grateful to Kay for her service, and we thank her from the bottom of our heart!
