Lystra Smith, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, is one busy lady! Lystra served 24 years with the US Army before retiring as a Sergeant Major, then spent another 8 years in civilian employment. She also taught ESL for 6 years. Once fully retired, she began volunteering for Meals on Wheels at the Woodbridge Senior Center. The site manager in Woodbridge recommended Lystra sign up for RSVP so she could take advantage of the program's mileage and insurance benefits.
Lystra has volunteered for Meals on Wheels since 2014, and normally delivers meals to 10 families once a week. She also substitutes when volunteer shortages come up. In her spare time, Lystra enjoys doing crafts, cooking/baking, spending time with grandchildren and serving as a Tax Counselor for AARP. Lystra also serves on her HOA's board.
Lystra feels the most rewarding part of volunteering is the positive impact she makes when providing a hot meal and socializing with her clients. Kathy Ambrose, Woodbridge Senior Center Site Manager, says this: "Lystra is so energetic, enthusiastic and very positive! You can't help but be happy around her. She also participated in filming a video about Meals on Wheels last year which people can view on You Tube."
Meals on Wheels delivers over 200 meals daily to homebound seniors in the Prince William community. Dedicated volunteers such as Lystra make it possible for these individuals to receive a hot, ready-to-eat meal, get some daily social interaction and remain living independently at home. Thank you Lystra, for doing Your part to make life better for our vulnerable seniors in the community!
