Francine Nelson has volunteered with Safe at Home Safe Alone since 2016. A resident of Woodbridge, Francine is a retired Administrator from Fairfax County Public Schools-After School Program.
After retirement, Francine wanted to serve her community, and heard about RSVP through a TV ad. She supports Safe at Home by presenting Life Skills to 4th graders on coping at home alone before parents return from work. She also volunteers for other opportunities such as our annual coat drive and Un Trim a Tree.
Francine says, "The most rewarding aspect for me is...seeing kids who are interested in learning that they are doing most things right when they're home alone…Hearing the questions from the kids as they are getting the program and knowing that many of their fears about being home alone are diminished afterwards makes me feel that my efforts are not in vain and that the program works. I love working with young people in the many aspects of their lives. Being able to continue to work with children after retirement is a great fit for me…For me it's all about the kids."
In her spare time, Francine is a devout Redskins fan, loves playing ping pong, coloring and travel.
Bonnie Fulford, supervisor for Safe at Home comments: "Francine…is always ready to help! She is one of our "go-to" volunteers...and we have received many thank you notes from the students saying how she has helped them feel more confident."
Safe at Home Safe Alone's success in reaching over 1,000 elementary school students is due to dedicated volunteers such as Francine. Thank you, Francine, for Everything!
