Our volunteer spotlight for today shines on Ron Lawray, a volunteer driver for Veterans Enhanced Transportation Service (VETS). Originally from Connecticut, Ron moved to DC at age 16, then eventually relocated to his current residence in Dale City.

Ron's passion for social issues includes prior experience with foster parenting and supporting the Arlington County Hotline. After witnessing many residents who rely on taxis for daily routines such as grocery store shopping and appointments, Ron vowed to help those who struggle with transportation.

Ron volunteers up to three times a week, driving veterans and their spouses to their medical appointments. His biggest joy in volunteering is knowing he spares seniors the financial and emotional stresses of depending on taxis, budgeting cab fare and concerns over returning home safely.

Based on comments in a survey of VETS clients, it's apparent that Ron enjoys a great rapport with everyone. Several clients have remarked, "Ron is very nice and very supportive!", "Empathetic and concerned about my welfare." And, "Ron is my 'Guardian Angel!' He's greatly improved the quality of my life!"

Ron says, "…my payment as a volunteer is the FUEL that will continue to motivate me until I am no longer able to do so." RSVP is grateful for compassionate volunteers like Ron, and we thank him for doing His part to improve the quality of life in our community!
