Alternative Community Service Work
Community Service - Volunteer Prince William (VPW) is the coordinating agency for all court-related alternative community service work (ACS) in Prince William County (PWC), for both adult and juvenile cases. We routinely process referrals from the 31st General District Court and PWC probation offices, with our fees paid by the county. Cases from other courts (out of Prince William), State or Federal probation officers, as well as self-referrals opting to perform ACS (Community Service) prior to conviction/Court, are subject to a fee of $100 payable at intake. Payment can be made by money order made payable to Volunteer Prince William or credit card.
ACS clients provide relevant background information, sign a contract to perform ACS, and are then referred to an ACS site as convenient as possible to their home location and schedule. The entire intake process takes only 15-20 minutes. Upon notice of completion from the ACS site, we report the success directly to the appropriate local authority, or provide a letter for the client to coordinate with other jurisdictions and agencies.
Intake interviews are conducted by telephone weekdays only, 9am to 4pm. Site location change requests will be processed ONLY BY TELEPHONE AFTER THE 10th OF EACH MONTH. Please review your court date and take this into consideration.
If you have a completion letter, please email or FAX it to us using the information below. You may also slip it through the mail slot in our front door.
Links are provided below to the documents needed to start the Intake Process. If you are 18 or older please sign the "Adult Waiver and Release" form. If you are 17 or younger please sign the "Juvenile Waiver and Release" form. The "Client Intake" and "Standards of Conduct" forms apply to both adults and juveniles.
All candidates for community service must complete an online form. These forms are used during an assessment interview.
If you have questions about the process or forms please email Shelley Tibbs at stibbs@volunteerprincewilliam.org. Every effort is made to answer phone calls as they come in; however, duties sometimes require staff to step away from their desk. PLEASE NOTE: If you do not leave a message we will not know to call you back. Please do not tell your PO "no one called me back".
How we work:
Interview: Interviews last approximately 30 minutes. Within the interview, charges, work experience, skills, interests, availability, transportation resources and the program guidelines will be discussed Interviewees are advised to have any pertinent case information from the court, an attorney, and/or probation officer. A photo ID may be required in addition to a program fee.
Placement: Placement with a community service agency is based on the information provided and maybe influenced by the charge, transportation resources, time availability, skills, and experiences. Additional placements may be necessary when an individual is not able to complete his/her hours at their original worksite.
Tracking and completion: Once the volunteer hours are met, no later than three business days before the assigned court date, the site supervisor will verify the service hours completed and email the recorded hours to Volunteer Prince William. When received, a completion letter will be prepared and sent to the legal representative or contact person court listed on the intake form. A copy will also be sent to the volunteer via email. In special circumstances the completion letter may be mailed.
